What You Should Know About Children and COVID-19 Testing

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone has become very familiar with COVID testing. Many people have experienced having a test at least once and know what to expect. However, parents and guardians of children need to fully understand child COVID-19 testing. You may have questions about testing and children, how the tests may be different, and if you should even have a child tested. Here are some things you need to know:

Which Test Is Best for Your Child?

There are different types of COVID tests that may be best for your child. A molecular test searches for genetic material in the virus. The samples taken from the child are analyzed in a lab where an antigen test searches the test material for proteins in the virus. A molecular test is considered the best form of testing because it is more specific and sensitive. However, it can take several days to get the results. You get faster results with an antigen test, typically within minutes, and it can even be proctored at home. However, these tests are not considered as reliable.

The need for the test will also determine which form of test is best for your child. If the need for the test has certain requirements for sports teams or traveling, for example, you may have to get a certain type of test to satisfy any requirements.

How Is a Sample Collected in a Child?

The testing samples are collected in the same way they are for adults. There are different types of swabs used to obtain the sample. A nasal swab tends to be the most common sample method, but there are different types of swabs for the nasal cavity. Some swabs need to be placed deeper into the nose and can be more uncomfortable. When possible, practitioners may opt to use a more comfortable swab for children.

A saliva test is another method of obtaining a test sample. The child would simply place some saliva into a test tube. The tube is sent to a lab and analyzed to determine if the virus is present. A throat swab is another method of sample collection. A swab is placed in the throat and rotated to gather a sample for testing.

How Can You Prepare Your Child for Testing?

No matter what type of COVID testing method your child has, you should try to prepare them ahead of time, especially for younger kids. You should know which testing method your child will have. You should then describe what will happen during the test. Emphasize the test will not hurt but might feel funny for just a moment. Make sure you are able to go to the testing room with your child to offer reassurance and reduce fear.
